Personal Comment:
I love this book as it introduces us to one of the best artists in time. Frida Kahlo did not do anything by the books, she was unique and loved expression her heritage everywhere she went. Even with the obstacles throughout her life and and the illness, she managed to keep herself together and create masterpieces. Today she is still alive as her work is everywhere; her home is a museum that holds many of her original work.
Hello! Great post! I think this is a great book to read for kids. "I Am Frida Kahlo" by Brad Meltzer is a children's book in the biography or historical fiction genre. It is part of the "Ordinary People Change the World" series, which attempts to introduce young readers to historical personalities who have had an impact on them. The book provides a concise and fascinating narrative of Frida Kahlo's life and influence as an artist. I believe I wrote about something in this collection. Once the students have learned about this wonderful artist, have them make small crafts based on whatever part of her biography moved them the most. Flowers, a self-portrait, a blue house, everything goes! Allow children to place everything in a small container or cardboard tube that has been decorated as Frida Kahlo. Another activity is, doing a reading comprehension activity. You can ask the students a series of questions based on what they have read. Good job!
