The Ugly Duckling

Summary:

One day an ugly cygnet decides to leave home as he is always being bullied. But in the end after all he had been through, when he grows up he turned into a beautiful swan.

Genre: Folklore        Age: 3+

This story opens the children's imagination, where each can imagine how ugly the cygnet was. Through the realistic illustrations they can make a connection with themselves. This story helps give ideas on how to handle the mean and rude comments tolds, they can brush them off and become something beautiful like the swan did in the end.

Suggested Activities:

*Before/After reading

Ask children if they have experience anything like the cygnet. Create a chart or list to compare review after reading the book.

*After reading

Create blank templates of a cygnet and sawn and allow the children to illustrate what the believe represents them.

Personal Comment:

This story is great as it shows the children how they make others feel when they are mean to others. It helps them become bolder for themselves and shows the end result of what they can become in the end. It shows them that only because one is different doesn't mean it is bad.

Comments

  1. An activity I would suggest would be allowing the children to create their own version of what they read in the book. This would mean asking them "what do you think it means when they say the ugly duckling?" "Why did they think he was ugly?" Have them draw the before picture and let them explore and get creative to decide what the duckling will look like when he grows up.

Another activity I would suggest would be to create a story map and talk about what happens with the duckling from beginning to end. This will allow the children to understand the lesson behind the story.
